Can I use an aerogel blanket under my hearth pad to increase R value? Are there any downsides to using aerogel?
We need a hearth pad R value of .8. We are thinking of using a .2 inch aerogel blanket (R value 1.46) under about .5 inch slab of slate (R value .05).

What stove is this for? Is the insulation requirement R=.8 or the reciprocal K=.84?

I would be concerned about this products compressability and combustibility. Two sheets of 1/2" Durock cement board with edgeguard will get to R=.78 and if 5/8" then R=.98.

We are going for the look of the slate laying flat on the hardwood floor. We can cut out the 3/8 inch flooring to replace with a layer of insulation with adequate R value. Hoping to not have to cut out the subfloor layer below that.
The aerogel is cost effective and looks easy to use, but I haven't read about anyone using it under a hearthpad.

A mineral fiber board (1/2" Micore) or ceramic board ( 1/2" fibrefrax) is what should be used.
