[Hearth.com] Advice on Safe Installation of Vintage Stove
Looking for advice on how to safely install this 1976 Comforter stove I inherited. It's in good condition. I want toadspt my fireplace for its use. The flue end is already planned out but in concerned with the surround. I'm not sure a heat shield will suffice. Any insight would be appreciated.

If this is an unlisted stove, the clearance requirement to combustibles are 36" in all directions. Check with the insurance company. Some will not allow an unlisted stove.

Check with insurance first. If they say no, then it's a non-starter. If they say ok, then the wood mantel is the next obstacle, particularly above the stove. Shielding sticking out 12+ inches is going to look odd. Then there is the hearth. A fire resistant rug is not permanent and will not have the insulation value required. A hearth extension will be needed.
