Hi, my name is Dave, and I'm a pellet-a-holic. I had a 10 cpm installed, and in just a month or so, I've saved about $400 on propane already, and it hasn't really gotten cold yet.
I live in a pellet desert, and I'm nervous about supplies. I'm not sure when the big box stores will stop selling for the year, and the prices have been all over the place. Lowes started at 4.23, then went up to 5.97, and now they're down to 3.14 per bag if you buy a ton. This led me to make a rookie mistake, and I grabbed 100 bags of Eco flame before I had the stove installed. I had read good reviews and thought they would be fine and...ok no more excuses. Newbie mistake. Anyway, they burn terribly. Almost no heat, and lots of ash. I hate them. They're not even a shoulder pellet, more of a elbow pellet or something. I still have my receipt, and will likely take most of them back to Lowes. I've had good luck with the Presto-logs so far, and I now have about 175 bags that I've purchased for about $160/ton.
My local TSC has a few Pro-pellets, a bunch of Greenways, and Lowes just got some AWF in. Right now, lowes is charging $157/ton, and I think TSC will match them. I'm going to buy a few bags of each and see how they burn before I commit to a ton or more. My storage is sorta tight, but I can fit another ton or two. If I can buy good pellets for $157/ton....I need to buy a bunch...right? What has been the historic average price of pellets? Saving $50 on a ton probably doesn't make it worth having to trip over a ton of pellets all summer, but saving $100 probably makes it worthwhile. Thoughts?
