Adapting pelletvent pro to existing Duravent/duraplus ceiling box.

Longtime lurker, first time poster.

We’ve got an existing chimney setup from our woodstove. It was Duravent dvl stovepipe to a square ceiling box and then to duraplus chimney through the attic and out.

We just got our first pellet stove and I’ve got pelletvent pro pipe for it. I have researched the adapters and everything I should need.

My question is should I drill these rivets out so that I can install my adapter? The top section of dvl pipe is one of the extendable sections. The top of this section is riveted to a piece that is protruding out of the ceiling box. I would like to attach my 6 inch to 3 inch adapter to the adapter ring right at the ceiling box, but I don’t want to drill these rivets out on the chance that this extendable piece has to stay attached how it currently is.

But does yours have this extendable section riveted to the ceiling box? I’d really rather not have a 12 inch long section of 6 inch pipe hanging down from my ceiling before adapting to the 3 inch pelletvent.

Okay. I’m just wanting to make sure that if I drill those rivets out, I’ll be able to attach my adapter and the reducer straight to the adapter.

Are the rivets interfering with the connection? Is it fastened on each end of that section of pipe?

The rivets secure the outer sleeve of the extension to a piece that spins freely coming through the ceiling box. The extension has no way to attach to other pipe if the inner sleeve is removed.

Ahhh ok i studied you pics and i see what you mean. Mine has 6” double wall to the rain cap and protrudes 2”-3” below the ceiling box so my adaptor fit like a glove. Without moving the slider down and bring a straight pipe up (if possable)

Okay, I drilled the rivets out. I’m beyond frustrated about how little information is available out there. The instructions duravent has are vague at best. These products have been on the market for decades.

So what I’ve got now is this in the following pictures:

After drilling the rivets and removing the extension section of DVL pipe, both the outer wrap and the inner sliding double wall piece. This section of single wall stainless is the inner most piece to it all. It will not come out of the double wall ring still in the ceiling box. The whole bit sticking out of the ceiling box freely spins around.

2nd and 3rd photos, my 6dvl-adt adapter first without the stainless collar installed it gets close to being able to screw into the ceiling box, but can’t quite fit all the way up. Slightly loose around that section of single wall pipe that I thought I could possibly cut shorter. Then with the collar installed, it’s snug along the single wall pipe but stops even shorter of the ceiling box because of interference with that ring of double wall right at the ceiling box.

Last photo is my 3pvp-x6 pellet vent adapter. It fits snugly to that single wall pipe and looks (can’t confirm it indeed will) like it might go up and the dvl ring would slip inside of the top of the x6 adapter if I cut the whole piece of single wall out about flush with the bottom of the dvl ring at the ceiling box.

I’m having to stop here until I can get further confirmation on things because at this point I can screw the extension piece back in place. If I cut that single wall pipe erroneously, I might cause more grief and another outrageously priced piece of pipe. (The pricing of this stuff is a whole different story I could gripe about some other time)

Upon further inspection, I believe that I CAN get that 6dvl-adt to go up flush with the ceiling box with a bit of massage. I noticed the inside rivet bits are what are catching and they’re pushed in a bit so that the adapter isn’t truly round. If I can get those pushed out just a bit, it’ll slide up all the way.

My thought then is to cut the length of that stainless single wall which is currently there so that it slides down fully into the top portion of the 3pvp-x6 adapter. Then I can screw it to the installed 6dvl-adt and there remains a constant double wall section through all of that.

The rest should be just fine as it’s all 3pvp sections with no adapters needed until the appliance adapter at the rear of my lopi pellet stove. That adapter I’ve already confirmed fits.

I’ll hold off on anything further until people have a chance to chime in for a bit.

I’ve attached a picture of roughly where I’d cut that section of stainless. I would still need to measure through both of the adapter pieces to make sure how long I need to keep the stainless section to ensure a good snug fit throughout.

My wife absolutely would not be having that. She’s already unhappy enough with the fact that we’ll have to run a couple 45s to get the new pipe lined up with the ceiling box and existing chimney.

I’d be okay with it, but honestly would rather it all be one size up to the ceiling as well.

I’m still waiting on my tee to arrive from Amazon. It’s been delayed. Even then, I’m not sure I’d be able to get a photo showing everything as it is a corner install.

The appliance exit is about 6 inches off from center and the stove will need to set further back than our old freestanding wood stove did because it’s deeper front to back. Couple that with a rear exit compared to the original top flue and it’s not a completely straightforward install. Haha

well that sounds about right the wife does not like it.. personally i look at what im saving compared to how it looks.. I can live with the looks

I wish I could do it that way, but the only way to do it in my application without the 45s or without them being seen would be a new chimney all the way out and the resulting ceiling repair work or a new hearth pad that comes out further and then ends up partially blocking the straight path into a hallway. I can’t do a through the wall chimney either because one wall just goes to the closet of a bedroom and the other wall goes into the garage.

That’s basically what my plan is now. I’ve measured everything and will cut that piece of stainless single wall that is still attached to the piece at the ceiling box. It will slide into the 6dvl-adt that I have and down to the bottom of the 3pvp-x6. I’ll put a bead of sealant around in the bottom to ensure a good seal and also on the flange of the 6dvl-adt where it will be screwed into place on the ceiling box. That way there’s a full seal both inside and outside of the outer airspace in the dvl section, keeping it all working as it was intended from the factory. Then it’s just attaching my pvp pieces from there down to the back of the pellet stove. I think it’ll work just fine, even if not quite fully how it’s intended to all go together. Since I’m keeping a tight seal and keeping the inner chimney area separated from the outer airspace, it will keep the outer pipe layer cool like it’s supposed to as it transitions into and through the attic.

I’ll be hopefully done with all of this and just waiting for my tee to arrive this afternoon when I get home. With any luck, the tee will show up Friday as it currently says it will and then can have my first burn Saturday or Sunday. I work 4 on 4 off 12’s, so won’t have much time to fiddle with things after this afternoon until next Monday. Hopefully there’s no need to fiddle around with anything else and it just goes together like it should! 🤞🏼😂

We’ve got temps in the low 20s forecast through the next week still after these last two weeks. The power bill from running the old dinosaur of a furnace is going to hurt when it shows up.
