A little Oak Score! (pics)

Needed to help my family clean up a mess the power company left by their business. Most of the good stuff was gone by the time I got there. Got a couple big rounds and some branch wood. They still have the main trunk standing by the road. The rounds in the picture are from about 20' up. I figure it's about 3-4' DBH. I'm probably going to wait a while before I take it down. I'm not real crazy about these big trees... they are a lot of work!

Agree with you on these big rounds. Its great to get 15+ splits out of a round, but getting it split is such a pain in the @$$. Nice pickup though all in all. And pretty cool sawbuck.

I decided to give it a go with the Fiskars and... The wood was almost no match (a big crotch piece won a small battle) the 36" long 20"+ rounds got cut into 4 18" long pieces and it all got split except for part of one of the rounds. I'll post a pic of the pile that it made as soon as my camera battery is charged.

I like splitting the big oak rounds. You can get so many pieces out of a round and oak splits pretty easy. I would think it would be more difficult in a splitter because just moving them around is a pain. But I could be wrong. I cut a bunch in the woods this summer and could not even think about bringing them up to split, so I just split them where they lay. I think on the rest of the tree you may want to split it where they lay and not mess with loading the big pieces.

Those can be fun to split, either by hand or with a splitter. Moving them in a splitter really is not all that bad either.

I like getting a chance to put on the 24" bar and chain, but I don't like moving those big rounds by hand!

Perhaps some additional leverage would help? Pry-bar or similar - roll them up a ramp and into a trailer?

Or - you sounds pretty Fiskars savvy - might as well split em on sight/site to lighten the load! :coolgrin:

Tipping them up on end would be harder than splitting them with a Monster Maul.

I have 3+ years of oak so I can wait until I'm in the area with skid steer and grapple. I'll snap a shot of the tree next time I'm there.

The state and the power companies sure have their work cut out for em. They've been toppin all the standin dead oaks around here for weeks and haven't even made a dent.

Nice score! I prefer working with big rounds. I quarter them where they lie so that I can load them on the truck then split them as I unload at home.

They sure have. I see lots of marked and topped trees all over our area.
