I was in valley lumber today and saw a Hitachi chainsaw and couldn't resist playing with it. The store owner ( good man ) came up and started praising his he heats with an outdoor wood boiler furnace and goes through a lot of wood in the process. He said that they have a decent amount of power and from what I could tell it was very well balanced! All that said it did look like some cheap plastic not very ruged however the owner said he had dropped his a couple of times and it held up well. They also come with a 7 year consumer warranty this is all second hand as I am considering buying there small light saw and am researching myself.
A while back I saw one at a store on sale for $115 or so. It was made in china so I put it back down and carried on. The warranty is nice but not if you have to always use.
Generally speaking I'd saw Hitachi power tools are very good....though I've never seen their chainsaw. Compound sliding miter saw is great, as is the portable air compressor....Generally reviewed well in Fine Homebuilding....
