Enviva plans to build wood pellet manufacturing facility in North Carolina
EBR Staff Writer Published 08 August 2011

Enviva, a manufacturer of processed biomass fuel in the US and Europe, is planning to construct its second wood pellet manufacturing facility in North Carolina, US.

The One North Carolina Fund awarded grant to support the new biomass facility, which is expected to be operational as early as October 2012.

Enviva's Northampton plant is designed to produce 400,000 metric tons of wood pellets annually.

The facility will join Enviva's four other wood pellet plants, including one currently completing construction in Ahoskie with production planned to begin this October.

The company said wood pellets from both of its plants will be stored and loaded at Enviva's Chesapeake, Virginia, deep water port facilities.

The new plant, which is anticipated to be functional by October 2012, has received funding from the One North Carolina Fund of the state. The proposed wood pellet facility is the second such facility of the company in the state and is expected to provide 62 new employment opportunities to the area.

The new plant at Northampton will have the capability to manufacture around 400,000 t of wood pellets every year. The construction completion of the new facility will bring up the total yearly production capability of the company in North Carolina to 750,000 t. The new production facility will get added to the other four wood pellet production facilities of Envia including its Ahoskie, N.C facility, which is anticipated to commence its production by October this year. The company will utilize its deep water port facilities at Chesapeake, Va., to store and load the wood pellets produced from the North Carolina plants. It is an important export terminal of the company developed exclusively for secure and dependable storing and handling of its pellet products.

The wood pellet manufacturing facilities of the company located in North Carolina will join with its other production facilities in Armory and Wiggins, Miss and its plant located in Belgium. The company with its process facilities all over the Southern United States and Mid-Atlantic region continues to retain its leading position as a preferred wood biomass supplier for power generation and utility companies globally.

Currently under construction, Enviva’s newest facility located in Ahoskie, NC will be operational this October. Credit: Enviva LP

They built a HUGH pellet silo about 45 minutes from me in Chesapeake, VA. The thing is massive. It holds 50,000 metic tons of pellets. They put it up in just a few hours.

Sounds more like all these pellets will be sent over seas. We wont see any for the US stove owners.
