I get this Stihl newsletter emailed each week... this one happens to be from last week. Good for a few laughs. It is marketing to the general public after all..
Don't Wait Until Winter - Start Stocking Up on Firewood Today
Most of us don't think about firewood until it's time to burn it, but the fact of the matter is that it takes a fresh log or a green log a few months to dry out sufficiently to put in your fireplace. So early fall is the time to start stocking up for those cold winter nights.
Wood dries out the fastest if split immediately after cutting it.
When you're splitting wood, it's best to put your sections of
log on a hard surface. If you don't have a tree trunk, take a
large section of log and partially bury it in the ground.
To keep the pieces of wood from flying all over the place
when you're splitting it, put a tire around it.
Next, consider an ax and a maul. An ax is used for cutting a tree
down; a maul is heavier and not as sharp and used to split the
wood.
When it comes to stacking wood, the object is to dry it
as quickly as possible. Keep it out of the rain, keep it in the
sun, stack it loosely enough that air can blow right through it,
and keep that bottom layer off the ground.
