5 inch flue pipe instead of 6

a friend of mine owns a jotul f 500 eco stove (European, without cat) and wants to use the same flue as a previous stove, which is about 5 inches instead of 6, can it work? what can go wrong? Thank you
 
It might possibly work if the flue is tall enough for good draft and there aren't confounding issues in the house like negative pressure. The downsides could be more smoke spillage when reloading and poorer performance in mild weather. When in doubt, ask Jotul.

I ran a 25ft 5.5” insulated liner for a long time. It ran fine, but it might have been a completely different experience with a 6” liner. There are so many variables in running a stove it’s hard to say how it’ll react.
