I only cut about 4-5 cords a year, but with some of the big oaks I scrounge my 290 seems like it's just not enough sometimes. I'm thinking about a 460 off CL, but there are some 660's lurking around there. Is a 660 overkill?

660 will be slower than a 460 unless your bucking wood over 50+ inchs!

slower d/t lower RPM's?

The 660 has more toque less rpm This doesn't make it any faster until it wearing a 36 inch bar and buried. If your under 50+ inch wood 460 the saw. If your always over 50+ inch's tree 660 the Big Dog to have. Both really nice saws

C'mon, Lee. you don't get to "differ" without explaining why!

J,,,, eye beg 2 differ!

I am much quicker with a 460 28 inch bar. You put a 28 on the 660 things change. Now put a 36 on big wood no dought 660 faster, But its going to be monster wood. Same thing with an 880 just depends on your wood.

..................... kinda like same length track,,,,, 4.3L V6 Vs. 5.7L LT1 GM!
Mmmmmmmmm Hmmmmmmmmm!

Play with bar sizes and it MITE be a horse a piece! 16 on 046 and 20 on 066 in 14" and 18" wood and prolly same game!

I think so when you get use to your area and do it for a long time some set ups just better than others. I ran my 460 long enough to be able to tune it by ear in the cut by pressure.

Now your changing everything....Just a everyday work saw 28 inch on a 460 a 36 inch on a 660 ! The 880 with a 21 inch bar is suppose to be very fast in the hardwood... Dont know and probally never find out...lol It always depends on a lot of factors.
I cut a lot with my 460 28 inch most of the not wishing I had a 660 36 inch bar.

Back on topic tho.....

No home owner needs bigger then a 460..It will do all they need.. Now when CAD takes over all bars are off....

When did bar length come into it???? We run 20 inch on everything around here, even my 64 wears one most of the time...

LOL you want to carry a 660 with a 20 inch bar that must be a TN. thing. 20 inchs a 440 more than enough saw...Unless you have all hedge apple what the Heck do I know?

They have logged here so long that there is almost nothing a 20 inch bar can't handle.... Heck we just tuned the 084 and put a 28 inch bar on it..It was the biggest 404 bar the dealer had.....

We have a lot of monster tree's most going to veener companys and 5 saw mills that I know of. I just mill what ever looks good enough that I run across.
Cant and dont want to carrie my 880 unless that thing is a Super monster!

I've been very happy with my 660 with both a 25" and a 36" bar on it. I wanted a saw that would cut anything I need, however I also have a 80cc saw and a 60cc one. If you can swing the cash go with the bigger one. Only time I would say no would be if you had to carry your saw all day. If that is the case a smaller saw that would work would be your best bet.

Hello i3bpvh

The 460 will be more than enough for what you are doing.

460 with 24" bar is very wel balanced and not to heavy for all day cutting .

The 460 will feel like three times the saw the 290 is.

Take care
