Just put in my Avalon stove

Hey guys great forum I learned pretty much everything I needed to know before I installed my new, well used pellet stove.

I got an Avalon pellet stove off of craigslist for $500.

The stove just needed to be sanded down and spray painted and the brass needed a good polising and now the stove looks new. I also gave it a full clean inside as well.

The stove is from 1993 and is an avalon 900 PS model.

I bought an install kit for $201 with the fresh air intake kit included.

So for $701 I have my stove installed. Great deal for me with the price of these stoves around $1500-$2000 pre installed.

I would take a picture but my digital camera is broken.

Also I bought a ton of pellets from TSC in Putnam Connecticut for $249. Was the cheapest price I could find.

They are the Maine pellets and I know some people hate them but they claim to be around 0.5 ash and burn pretty hot. They have been ok through 2 bags for what thats worth. Anyway thanks guys for a great forum!

A second to what Macman said, welcome and post pictures when you can.

If by "Maine pellets" you are refering to Maine Woods from Athens. Maine, you are correct that last season many purchasers were disappointed with their pellets because of quality problems and inconsistent product. I have heard from different sources that much of their problems have been resolved. The ton that I bought last year was from a good run and have burned well. You should have no problems with them, just keep your stove clean.

I 3rd what macman said. Welcome and make yourself at home. Very good place for info and lots of smart people here. ranger has a good tip with keeping the stove clean. Keep it clean and it will keep you warm!

Got to see some photo's of the stove. It's kind of a must see for us here.

TSC had 2 brands of Maine pellets. One was Maine Choice and the other was Mainewoods. Mainewoods is supposed to be better this year(as ranger said) and Maine Choice as supposed to be decent pellets.

Yea they are maine woods from athens maine.

I have a shop vac just for the stove and bought the manual online and learned all the places to clean it.

The stove needed a little TLC and a major cleaning, but it really is like brand new.

The air flow is so good I have to push the damper all the way in to keep the pellets from flying out of the pot. It keeps my 2200 square foot house at a very nice 78 degrees running on low.

The previous owner said he put a new motor in it last year. Not sure what motor ir was prolly the exhaust fan motor but i don't really know. I love the stove it runs perfect.

I will post some pics next week when I get my new camera.

Ok guys got my camera to work so here are the pics.

I forgot to mention I made the hearth pad myself with supplies from home depot that cost me $80 so total price is $781 for this whole setup installed.

I am now looking into generators, cheap ones of course and a ups so no smoke comes in if the power goes out. Any suggestions?

hard to answer the generator question....we don't know how much you want to spend. Are you looking to just power the stove, or other things as well?

As for the UPS, this is the one I got for my stove....about $100 on Amazon. It has outlets that are surge protected (1038 joules) in addition to the UPS:

Can't give you an exact figure, since I'm not sure how many watts my stove pulls during normal running, but I'm sure it will run the stove the 25 seconds it takes for the generator to kick on and switch over. The specs on the unit are as follows:

Full load runtime
3 minutes (1000VA / 500W)
Half load runtime
9 minutes (500VA / 250W)

So even if the stove drew 375 watts, it should last about 6 minutes. I'm guessing the stove draws less than that.
