Pictures Wanted! Wood storage near the stove....

I have been using a small U shaped rack for wood storage near my Napoleon 1900. As the winter progresses, I am using a little more wood and need to store more wood near the stove. Would you please post some pictures of what you use for wood storage close to the stove?

No pic but use your imagination. I built a wood rack out of metal that is six feet long and three foot tall. It sits behind my stove and can hold enough wood for one week of burn time. I am finding out that it is APITA to carry the wood in to fill it, but my time as well as my wood is free minus my labor which makes the beer taste better. A little work has never hurt me...............yet

I'll have to take a picture when I get home (on vacation now). What I just set up is the following: I bought one of those chrome racks from BJ's (they sell them for kitchen use - wire shelves with the pole corners, you slide the shelves down the poles and choose what level to set the shelves at). Anyway, the rack can be configured as either one tall rack on wheels or two shorter 3 shelf racks (one with and one without wheels). I configured with second option. This gives me one static shelf to load wood on and one on wheels to roll across the floor to the deck where I can load it up from the woodpile that is just outside the door. It is saving me a lot of carrying wood back and forth across the house (I can't pass in the window near the stove unless I want to climb a latter, heh).

I just started this system a few days before we left - if it works out well I plan to expand it to another rack. Cost was less than many of the solutions for wood storage that I saw advertised and I really like having wheels under the load, plus the racks being wire shelves allow a lot of airflow to help with that last minute drying (somehow snow always comes in with my wood even when covered).

and all those rounds... do you split it up right there next to the stove? Won't it crack the tile?

This holds 4 days of wood. We like it cause of the 6" space under it makes it easier to clean when sitting on a plastic carpet runner. The drawer underneath holds kindling and you can see a few starter papers next to that. It sits about 6 feet away from the stove. You can get 'em at a BB store unassembled for about 20.

Do you guys have a problem with bugs being ressurrected by the warmth inside your house? My buddy in Maine has these huge wood beetles flying around inside in the dead of winter and we can only speculate that they come back to life when wood is brought inside the house. Fortunately I have a landing outside my door where I can store a few weeks worth so my wife doesn't have to worry about the creatures hibernating in the wood!

I was thinking the same thing myself. My wood is so dirty I've got in the habit of having a little dustpan and sweeper right there to clean up every time I load the stove. I couldn't imagine those piles inside my home. We've got lots more bugs down here though. If I had a stove in a basement then I could swing it, but the wife would definitely not go for it as is. The only wood I store fireside is the ones that don't fit when I'm trying to stuff it full.

Actually i don't stock wood inside till after we have some freezing temps. Still get a few wood roaches and spiders but
if they don't mind me, i don't mind them : )
Actually brought a Silver Haired Bat in with some firewood the other day. Didn't notice him till he warmed up and
started moving around. Took him back out to the woodpile and covered him up : )

CTBurns no bugs here with the wood we bring in but being up north probably makes a big difference. Another thing is our wood sits outside piled in the sun and gets really dried out for a couple of years. If we had beetles like your friend then we'd start drawing out of the unheated attached woodshed.

Let's hope you empty the duspan into the stove right away in case you sweep up a hot ember. I find I often have to close the door right away after loading or else it will smoke so I don't have time to be sweeping and disposing with a fresh load on. I wait a few minutes after closing the door to sweep and leave the dustpan on the corner of the hearth just in case. I then dispose it next time I open the door and won't leave the house without emptying the dustpan.

Nah.... not ashes sweeping up... all the junk that comes off the wood when I set it on the hearth right before loading. Never hot coals and never even clean the little lip thingie while it's hot.

Well my imported wife who spent a lot of time up in Timmons gets cold when it turns 50. I guess it's all relative. She's the coldest Canadian I've ever seen. I always tell her that when she came to the South she came home. When we go back and visit she agrees. I take her up on every opportunity to burn though. And it keeps her from moving the thermostat to keep warm.

I'm in Maine . . . and happy to report no huge, flying wood beetles in my house. I do get some wood chips and the such from the wood's journey into the house from my outside porch, but as another poster mentioned I sweep that up and usually toss it into the fire.

I think if I ever brought a bat in with the wood, and my wife found out, she'd make me sell the stove! We all got a good laugh(at her expense) when she ran and screamed under a blanket the day a bat came into our room from the attic. You would swear someone was being tortured from the amount of noise.

I have stacks of wood everywhere in my basement. A trash can full of pine shavings for starting,
a crate of old newspapers, and 3 days worth on a table by the furnace. I could post pics, but it is
not a thing of beauty. This year, do with what I have. Next year gets planned out a bit!
