I am currently getting a 2" thick granite hearth installed. The contractors is installing it with a 3" overhang.

Upon doing some research, it sounds like a 3" overhang may not be structurally sound. Also, the inch or two leading up the overhang is brick veneer, and some other non-supportive material. So it could be as much as 4-5 inches of unsupported granite. Should these be cause for concern, or is 2" granite really strong stuff?
