Hello all! I have an old Lopi XL (I believe) 1984 wood insert. It’s never felt like it burned like it was supposed to and while I was getting a new fire ready and looked inside I notice this shelf looking thing inside the firebox. Is there supposed to be a reburner or cat converter that goes there?

To determine the model, a clear image of the firebrick pattern in the firebox is needed. The LX has a cavernous firebox that is 3 bricks deep.

There wasn't a cat in the LX series. In 1984 it had a firebrick baffle. The bricks appear to be missing in this case.

I did my best to clean it out. From what I can tell the base is two bricks deep, Long ways. Then they have the back wall one four bricks standing up side by side. If it is just firebricks I should be able to easily get those

Hmm, this doesn't match the Lopi X, FL, or LX of that era. The firebrick layout is more like an M 440, thought that was a freestanding model. Regardless, that cavity pictured appears to be the metal rack for a firebrick baffle that was common in the old Lopis. Without the baffle bricks in place, the flames and heat are heading right up the chimney.

I will do my best to track down some good fitting fire bricks. I’m just as lost in trying to figure out what model it is. I can’t find similar ones online. I greatly appreciate the advice. I knew something was wrong with it, never felt like it was heating properly

I found the tag and can confirm it is an FL from 84
