Doing my first burn

I started my first burn around 5 pm today.Seems like i have a great location for the stove!heat seems to be distributing fairly equal on the main floor and upstairs.Started out around 65 downstairs and is now mid to upper 70s!upstairs started alittle warmer 68 and is now mid 70s.Started with a small load and just alittle while ago i put some big stuff in.Its now burning with a av temp of alittle over 400 with air control lever alittle more than half way in.This is great!i should of done this long ago.
A few questions

What does an after burn look like?If its flames that seem to dance away from the wood then thats what i have.

I'm running 400 as an av now!is that about right?

I do see alittle smoke at times coming out of the chimney!Is that the norm with a EPA stove?

Any digital camera geeks out there who can tell me how to set my camera up to show the flame!I took pics but no flames showing.

With the Exception you aren't going to see the secondary burn effect like people with conventional re-burn tube technology do. The Exception is a down-draft stove that accomplishes the secondary burn in a closed chamber behind the firebox.

From what you describe flames sound like secondary combustion. With my insert they roll across the top of the wood slowly and it happens when insert is at about 500* or greater.

I, too, get a bit of smoke out of my chimney when I have the air shut down to only 25% open. Jotul rep said that for a unit the size of mine that is going to happen but not to worry about creosote due to the high temp. Smoke at a low temp is another story.

I haven't had my chimney swept since I had this put in a couple of months ago so I will know more then.

Im doing another burn tonight!might be the last because weather will be warming soon.Its burning very well temp average is around 575 deg.First burn reading were missleading!measured too far away temp was really about 100 deg higher.No smoke at all this time!started fire with larger stuff below and smaller on top.I have a question to any who have a harman type stove(down draft type) like mine!At times when afterburn is going real good in the back chamber it looks real hot back there threw the afterburner window.My thermal laser gun says temp maybe 550.I hope its not getting too hot back there and the gun is missleading me.Air intake is about half in.Getting some tinted buildup on the glass from the bottom to maybe half way up.Checked seal with dollar!its tight.Some wood pretty close to the glass!thinking that may be doing it.
