Outdoor fireplace

Last fall we bought a simple outdoor fireplace, your basic home-depot type; cast iron bottom, some grates around the side and a wire mesh top to keep the major embers from flying out. Currently we have it set on a rock patio off the side of the house, but we'd much rather put it on the deck. You know the deck... that WOODEN structure off the back of the house. So... what kind of pad or structure can I build to put the fireplace on to keep the deck from becoming its own heat source? I'll have to check the exact clearance from bottom of fireplace to ground, but I think it's about 4 inches. The other day we had a "roaring" fire going (meaning as much wood as I'd like to put into the thing) for about 2 hours. I placed my hand under the fireplace and the rocks felt hot. Not too hot too touch, but they'd definitely heated up. I probably could have held my hand their for a full minute or more before it got too uncomfortable. Any suggestions? Anyone put an outdoor fireplace on their deck (successfully)?

I too have a outdoor fire place on my deck...not the best spot. At first I did not use anything under the fire but discovered that the wood deck got very hot.
I now use a few patio stones, they never got hot to the touch.

you mean a chimera ? As far as putting it on the deck ...it's risky but as long as you never leave it unattended and have a fire extinguisher handy...why not?
