HEBRON -- A pellet stove is being blamed for an exterior fire at a single-family home Sunday night.
A neighbor reported the fire at the home of Robert Nailor on County Route 30 at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday.
Exhaust from a pellet stove caused the fire, which worked its way up the side of the house and got into the attic, Hebron Fire Chief George Flint said.
Multiple people were in the home at the time of the fire, but there were no injuries. There was some damage to the structure, and some of the house's siding was ruined, but the building is habitable.
"He had a houseful," Flint said, indicating that Nailor, his wife, several grandchildren and other family members were home at the time. "Apparently, they were up and about - if it were five minutes later or if the family had been asleep, it would have been a whole different story."
Everyone who was in the two-story home got outside by the time responders arrived at the scene, and the homeowner was working to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose, Flint said.
It was a quick knock-down, but firefighters were on the scene for more than an hour to ensure there wasn't a risk for re-ignition.
Responders were called to a working structure fire, so the exterior fire was smaller than they expected, Flint said.
Salem, Cossayuna and Hartford fire crews also responded to the scene.
