    Improving Gas Fireplace Aesthetics

    My existing gas fireplace works fine but is ugly. The top of the burner is 3" above the perforated pan. See the pictures. Can I safely add embers or lava rock to improve the look? Is there anything else I can do without spending a lot of money that would make it look better?
