20 year old Heatilator IPI flamed out immediately after lighting. Tech diagnosed the problem as the controller. Replaced controller and the fireplace lit up nicely but the on/off switch became inoperable. Fireplace can be turned on and off by unplugging and plugging in the controller.
 
Yes, I would prefer to use the switch rather than take the bottom cover off and plug and unplug the control box. Actually, I just put in a new switch to see if it made any difference. Now everything is dead - no spark.
