Ok for this season we need to have a contest..."Wood Tetris"....neener neerer!

I don't think I could go 40 hours cat active on a load of oak, either. Maybe if I had huge squared-off splits and packed it in completely full, but not in real operation.

Why not? My splits are mostly square, since I’m splitting out of big logs. The only non-square pieces come from the perimeter.

I guess I should be a shoe-in for BKVP’s stove Tetris contest

I tend not to have those, because I hand split the easier stuff (including big rounds) and only use the splitter for gnarly stuff. I do have some from back when I first got the splitter and was using it for everything just because it was a new toy. :)

Yeah, choosing out of that pile, you could pack a stove pretty full! Maybe I will see if I can do a maximum-burn-length load on the old PI this winter and see how long it can go.... not sure I've ever done that before. I think the brochure says 27 hours, and I do know for sure that I can do over 24.

What day? What day? WHEN ARE SUBMISSIONS DUE? WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES??

Someone might maybe have have taken up timber framing this year and be ready to win a free chimney sweeping next spring, just saying.

Four by six oh too small
Westminister rafters bigger
Too small four by six

A haiku already I have submitted now. Twice. Soon free chimney sweep.

Hee hee hee hee hee,
giggle giggle giggle snort sort
hee hee hee hee hee.

Thrice haiku and rolling
Long is alaska winter...

If you milled one humongous block that just barely fit in the door, loaded it on top of hot coals, and stuffed the cracks with smaller slabs.... that would burn for a while.

Of course you'd need to dry it for six years first. :)

Step 1) Pound down coals flat
Step 2) Load luggage in car
Step 3) Slide massive 8 year old chuck of walnut into King (ps can't see it once it dropped in)
Step 4) Load another 30lbs of maple and top off with 3-4 NIELS.
Step 5) Fly to Seattle. watch Superbowl, wake up in morning and fly to LAX, then Sydney, then Auckland.
Step 6) Call kids to learn fire is still going
Step 7) Start thinking of way to get even longer burns.

Challenge accepted. Got some red oak logs that are 36” diameter, just waiting for this. We will talk in 2025.

I have to get a contest approved by owner of this site....and prizes will be awarded, if approved!

Because winning is everything, someone’s gonna
1) modify a stove so the door is slightly larger than the firebox L/R and top, but with 1”space at the bottom for a coal bed
2) weld up/fabricate a contraption to load a megasplit without disturbing the coal bed (I have ideas, pm me!)
3) purchase carving tools (I’m a fan of pfeil.)
4) spend their summer shaping ‘splits’ to fit the box with 1/8” clearance on each side and practice loading on simulated coals (I’d recommend doing a rough fit with a chainsaw, then after drying, break out the carving tools to get everything square with tight tolerances)
5) put a megasplit in during the dead of winter, simultaneously thinking “why, oh why did I do this?” and “I can’t wait to show off to those chumps (including me) on hearth.com”
6) gloat online
7) explain to his wife why it was worth it (this argument may be lost, but I hope our ‘contestant’ puts up a good fight!)
8) gloat some more online even though he has come to realize his wife was right
9) debate other hearth.com users about how the design could/couldn’t have been better
10) try to convince his wife, again, the house really is warmer, referencing select hearth.com posts.
11) spend the rest of winter redesigning things to allow for only 1/2” of coals at loading
12) ask his wife very nicely for the new internet password

So when does the contest close? Its going to take me a few years to get the dooms day splits ready to burn

maybe I missed something here, but what is the premise of this contest? Is it stacking in the stove... its been a few weeks since i've been here :)

First, I need to get owner of site to approve.
Second, develop rules and benchmarks.
Third, prize structure.

In MT this week will pursue next week..
