My hearth stone is 71". The hardest part for me was calculating the overhang due to variances in the stone width and metal lath/mortar.

This may sound funny considering the hearth was done this year, but "I think " it is 6ft wide. The reason I say "I think" is because we went back and forth between 5.5 ft and 6ft and I think we settled on the 6ft. But I will confirm for sure tonight with a tape measure .

OK I confirmed last night it is 6ft wide.

If the fellas are on schedule my fp30 should be getting installed today... :)

'bout time... ;lol ...jk Hope they show up with the cold weather hitting us tonight you'll be pretty eager to fire it up tonight . Did they say if it will it be a 1 or 2 day install? Mine took 2 days.

It's in, and fired up :) took 2 fellas 6 hours. The only thing that grey were short was the b vent for the remote kit. Things are going well as far as I can see. 17'6" pipe straight up. Draft is good, fans seem quiet, pretty happy purchaser thus far. 8 or so bush cord of ash in possession that was cut last winter in preperation. Time to get the attic blown with the r60 now to keep the heat in the new build home. Livin the dream.....

Pictures burning........or it never happened. :p

Gonna need help with that too....

When you hit reply right beside the post reply is a upload a file box. Click it and select your pic. Then once it uploads it'll ask if you want to insert it as a thumbnail or full size. Pick either and presto. Easy peasy.

schat.. my hearth is 7' wide with stone 14' up to a vauled ceiling. I think it looks great. It's not huge but doesn't look small either. I think you will be very happy!! To report back on my vibration issue. I installed a new fan and wedged some fire place gasket under the other fan and that seem to have salved the issue. Will wait and see if it comes back. Time will tell.

I'm trying to decide between 7ft and 8ft for the masonry? I don't want the stove to look too small, so I'm leaning towards 7 ft. What do you guys think?

Here is a pic of mine. Hearth is 71" and the stone is 9' floor to ceiling. I personally think 8 might be a bit wide, but it might look fine if it's taller.

That looks perfect!

Yeah that looks great! I really want the FP30, but I'm worried that it will look to small with the larger hearth? The hearth is going floor to ceiling(15ft). I don't want it to look too tall/thin, and that is why I'm going 8ft wide.

Have you considered the new craftsman surround? It will make the fireplace appear bigger.

Here is a thread with more info on it: https://www.hearth.com/talk/index.php?threads/162781/

... and here are the fire pics. FINALLY.

Won't get too many more chances to fire it up this season . [emoji31]View attachment 196882

Hi Guys - i just got an FP30 installed a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with it! I'm planning to do black slate (12x24 tiles) on the exterior and i'm working on hewing a birch beam for the mantel which will be about a 7" square cross section. How did you guys attach your mantels? Saydinli - i noticed you used rebar - i'm wondering what you set the rebar in? Did you drill through the metal studs? Thanks guys! So much great information on here!

I used 5/8 all thread through the metals studs and nuts/washers to tighten it up. I then glued the beam to the all thread with construction adhesive.

Sounds like an awesome install. Please post some pics if you get a chance.

Thanks! I was thinking about going with some sort of french cleat arrangement (maybe recessed into the beam somewhat). But this sounds like a good option - did you go with 4 - two on each end?

Sorry I wish I would have gotten a picture of how it looks behind the cement board but the contractor married some 2x6's together and screwed them into the steel studs on either side, making sure they are well supported to prevent any twisting. He then drilled the holes through the cement board and 2x6's and made them just barely slightly larger and filled the holes with PL Premium construction adhesive and then inserted the rebar. He let it set a couple of days. When he installed the mantel he filled the mantel holes with construction adhesive, slid the mantel onto the rebar and supported it with a 2x4 for a couple of days.
Once the mantel was set and the adhesive dried, he tested it out by sitting on the mantel ( he's a big guy about 230lbs.) and it didn't even budge a millimetre.

I used 3. I forgot to mention I put a steel stud on the back side to give a larger surface area for the nuts/washers. Like saydinli, I used PL construction adhesive.

Thanks guys! I will be doing the tile myself so it may be after xmas before there is a finished photo! cheers!
Take pics along the way too.

bfast250 - did you put your screws through the metal studs which are provided with the fireplace when securing the mantel? Anybody see any reason why i couldn't do this? Seems based on the clearance requirements that i need about 53-55" clearance between bottom of mantel and the floor. which means i likely need to screw into those studs as the top of the studs is 63.5" from the floor. Anyone have any thoughts on this?? Thanks again!

That's correct. Sorry I don't have photos before I covered it with rock. I will say the bottom of my mantle gets very hot. If I could do it again and it would look correct, I would put my mantle a bit higher for added saftey. I tried to do this, but my wife said it looked odd because the mantle was so high so mine is right at the required height.
