1. "Pat Kerr" <[email protected]> wonders about the trade show

For the first time in a long time the HPA show is being held in a city which I would actually _not_ go out of my way to avoid (as in Vegas, Reno, Nashville). I would like to hear from dealers who have gone. What are the advantages you see in going to this yearly event. Mostly, I wonder about folks who don't go because they are distributors or manufacturers reps, but who go to get something out of the show for their businesses back home. Is it worth it? It's a fairly long hop from Canada, as it is from many parts of the US.. I also wonder how much is relevant to the Canadian market. We have our own show every year in Toronto and it has usually been worth going to. I agree with Craig that the hearth industry is changing and needs the 'heart' put back into it. WHAMMO-BAMMO!!!,, and we have a new horror story to read about...

3. Craig Issod Writes: Hello to all my wired friends. The good folks at Fireside in Bend Oregon have come up with an amazing softwar package called HearthPro - designed for and by hearth retailers. For more info, go to their web page under the "clubhouse" section of HearthNet. Remember, to get there you need to typr the url http://hearth.com/news/club.html and then the username "hearth" and password "fire". HearthNet is experiencing a tremendous growth spurt, with new manufacturers and retailers signing up on a daily basis. If you have been "sitting on the fence" about signing up, I urge you to get going so we can avoid TOO far of a backlog. This mailing list is starting to grow nicely, and we are getting close to attaining a critical mass. of course, no matter how many member we have, if all of us keep quiet then there won't be much dialog. With that in mind, I welcome folks to post to the list -- any subject related to the members is fine. In fact, you can post just to introduce your self ! I have also been remiss in not introducing new members of the list ..with that in mind, let me mention just a few of the folks who have signed up recently: [email protected] (love less ash company) [email protected] (Village West) - The Hearthwarming and Trade Mag folks [email protected] (Hickory Stove, N.C.) 1. The new Hearth and Home magazine has some very good stuff about Ventless, along with many other good articles. I know many folks don't get around to reading this stuff, but this months mag is important - it not only have some killer content, but it has the scoop on the Trade Show.

2. Jotul Press Release JØTUL USA RECEIVES ISO 9001 CERTIFICATION Jøtul, the world's leading manufacturer of cast iron heating stoves, has announced that it is now registered as an ISO 9001 manufacturer. "This is another important step in maintaining our international leadership," said Eivind Lindqvist, president of Jøtul USA. "ISO 9001 certification assures customers in the global marketplace that our quality control and production methods meet the latest standards for defect-free products." An upgrade from the ISO 9000 standard, the ISO 9001 quality system integrates Continuous Improvement principles with specific steps to control costs, increase productivity and reduce waste. It offers manufacturers a strong competitive advantage both in providing access to the global marketplace and in satisfying increasing customer demand for quality. "With ISO 9001 certification, Jøtul can remain on the leading edge of this industry," Lindqvist added. "It is an important component of our ongoing commitment to research and development, strict quality control and environmentally-sound production technology." Based in Norway, Jøtul has been designing and manufacturing quality cast-iron stoves since 1853. Known for craftsmanship and outstanding performance, Jøtul offers a complete line of both wood-burning and gas-fired stoves, in a variety of styles, sizes and finishes. Jøtul USA is headquarted in Portland, Maine; for additional information, call 1-800-797-5912 or visit the Jøtul stove website at http://www.hearth.com/jotul/jotul.html.

3. Terminal Case (Craig Issod says) I have received a very interesting letter and response to the recent article "the Dream is Over" in the From the Center section of the Clubhouse. It's author thinks that the water is already over the dam, and it will be tough to get it back. The article is quite long, so if you'd like to read it, go to http://hearth.com/news/club.html and then go to the "from the Center" area. Some Quotes from the letter: "I am quitting this industry - and this saddens me." "It's sad that manufacturers (mostly) see retailers as all Mom and Pop - no matter how sophisticated their expertise, reputation or sales" "This may already be terminal. The specialty dealer is caught in the greed crossfire, as the "Dream" author said. Be confident that it is greed. I know manufacturers who have vastly exceeded their owner's fondest dreams in terms of sales, growth , prof

2. Answer to "What can we do?"
3. Wood is good ?
1. What can we do ? (Ventless) >From Richard Kerr Sunworks Hawkesbury, Ontario Dear Craig, I agree with your approach as expressed in "The Dream is Over" and "Danger Ahead". I think a pivotal issue that will show the quality of the industry is the 'ventless' issue. To me, the promotion of 'ventless' is a cart without a horse or marketing without a good, safe product. Consider Paul Stegmeir's current report in 'Hearth and Home'. He is critical of the research and the guidelines, but soft-pedals his criticisms. The story tries to put a positive spin on it by advising 'proper selection', etc. Where is the research on health effects? Would the proponents of ventless put one in their own home? Are they so desperate for profit that they are willing to put people's health at risk before the health effects of ventless appliances are fully studied? Do you remember Dow Corning breast implants? What can be done by those in the industry who question the product? Richard Kerr Pat Kerr [email protected] [email protected] Richard, I am answering this, as well as posting it on the list. ____________________________________________________________________

2. Craig Issod ([email protected]) responds You ask, What can we do ? - I think we are already doing it - just by questioning the studies and demanding more information, we are producing a result. We will continue to petition the manufacturers, AGA and the HPA to further the research being done. It is my feeling (and the author in Hearth and Home), that: 1. These products are only for occasional use (1 to 3 hours a day) 2. A new generation of products will be produced , after all the studies are in, which address most of the current problems. When and if this happens, it's going to make the manufacturers have a little mud on their faces, as here are some quotes I have heard from these makers: 1. No, overuse is not a problem - you can use them 24 hours a day 2. Pets, smoking and other such factors will not affect the burning of our logs 3. The ODS provides a sure bet against products of combustion in the home. Our stores sell unvented products, but we have large signs above them saying "these are for occasional use, etc. etc -- if you are looking for a more serious solution to your heating needs, ask about direct - vent or top vent appliances." We also have a handout and other literature explaining what these (and other) products are designed to so. Craig

From: [email protected] Date: Fri, 8 Mar 1996 01:49:43 -0500 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Hearth Digest Two things: One, with all of the pissing and moaning lately about the demise of the specialty retailer in the hearth products busines, I can't help but play devil's advocate: what products can you think of that better lend themselves to specialty retailing than hearth products? They are complicated, expensive, potentially lethal if not properly installed, heavy, mysterious and the consumer only buys them occasionally. In addition, the array of products available is constantly changing, and overall improving. The stoves we sell now are much better than the stoves we used to sell, and therefore, there are good reasons to replace the old one. The problem, I think, is that few dealers are really doing the job of specialty retailing. They truly don't offer very good installation or repair service. Craig Issod got put on hold for ten minutes at Circuit Computer. Big deal; how many of you have more than one week backlogs in your installation or service departments during the season? How many phone calls get returned the next day? How many times do you need two trips to fix something because you lack the right spare parts? How much time do you waste shuffling through stacks of papers? Dealers lack good information systems. How many use a computer for anything? Produce monthly financial statements? How many dealers have nice looking, well merchandised stores? One of the best short pieces I've read recently is Richard Wright's editorial in the March "Hearth N Home:" "Look In The Mirror." He concludes: "Perhaps it's time to reassess and redifine your business and its goals. The exciting part is that you are tolally in control of that process - not the competition." As for me, I'm going to dust off the old business plan, take a hard look at everything we do, set some objectives and plan for the year to come, and strengthen our specialty retail hearth business. Thank God it's tough; otherwise Costco & Home Base would be creaming us. Second, I'm curious about the doings with VC, CFM and Majestic. We sell VC and have for about twelve years (it's a love-hate relationship), but the other two companies are somewhat unknown to us. How about some help? Do they make good products? Is this a marriage made in heaven? Are they good to do business with? Where are they strong or weak? Should I buy some CFM stock? What sort of book value and PE ratio does it sell for? Where have you found financial information?

2.From: Jim Butchart <[email protected]> Organization: The Fireplace People @ Hearth & Color Shop MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Hearth List <[email protected]> Subject: Follow up on our gravity-vent insert explosion This is a follow-up to an earlier post where I told you about an explosion a customer of ours experienced. The main point in that post was that we as dealers and installers have to respond immediately to this kind of situation to keep other "damages" to a minimum. We did this and the customer is very happy with his new dv inserts. The point of this post, however, goes beyond providing a quick response. I have always assumed a draft hood provided some measure of safety from down drafts. We are pretty confident that what happened in our incedent was that we got a downdraft and the draft hood could not relieve the pressure, or could not draft because of a tight fitting surround. The flame and pilot were then extinguished either because of lack of oxygen or a build up of flue gases. In any case the thermopile was hot long enough to keep the valve open, filling the box with gas. The ignition was probably provided by a second insert's pilot that shared the same "see-through" fireplace. The point I want to raise is this... how can a draft hood be cerified as safe, or even workable, if it is enclosed inside a fireplace. Every non-dv insert I sell, except one, has the draft hood behind a surround that provides no air flow for the drafthood. What makes it even more crazy is that I have one model that has two fans thatdraw their air from the same fireplace as the draft hood. The solution to that problemis to install spacers that keep the surround out away from the fireplace. The chance of a homeowner or a builder installing the unit without using those spacers is pretty great. The chances that a person could die of CO poisoning are even greater in my humble opionion. My understanding of the test procedure for inserts is basically the same as it is for a freestanding unit. The drafthood is tested with the insert not installed in an enclosed fireplace. Is that true? Seems to me that when a drafthood is isolated from free air, that it will not work. Any downdraft, or no draft will influence the burner and drive the the CO levels to intolerable levels. I sure would like to see the standard looked at and if nothing else, have the inserts tested in a real-world environment with stock surrounds in place and see if the drafthood even works with a downdraft. It would make a lot more sense if the drafthood got its air from the room instead of the fireplace. -- ____________________________________ Jim Butchart [email protected] "Do or do not. 3.From: [email protected] Date: Fri, 8 Mar 1996 21:41:06 -0500 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Hearth Digest 3/8/96 Quick response to Tim, Wal-mart... Not having the history that most folks in the industry do, but having visited many, many fireplace shops, I'd have to agree 100% about the lack of ability to handle all the details needed to run an efficient, effective shop. One doesn't have time to think about a way to manage those details, much less the money to buy a computer, nor learn how to use one. You've probably heard the story about the man who was walking in the woods and came across a logger sweating heavily as he cut slowly and painfully through the wood. After watching for an hour or so, the onlooker realized that the logger's chain saw needed sharpening. He tactfully questioned the logger about sharpening his saw to make the work faster and easier. The logger responded that he was so far behind that he couldn't take the time to sharpen it. We, in this growing group, know we have to continually sharpen our computer skills (as well as all the other skills needed to keep a fireplace/stove business going). Craig, you're doing several workshops at EXPO and might get to many who haven't yet become computerized. The best way to get to the majority of shops is through the industry journals? Have any of you submitted articles to "Hearth and Home" or any of the others? We all should be constantly assessing what we're doing and how we're doing. The problem is that the analysis could lead to no time for sharpening! It's so easy to ignore something that is difficult to do, whatever that may be. I, personally, have no flare for decorating. We have a very visible window in our store in Portland, OR. I know it can bring customers in or turn them away. We look at other stores on the street to determine what is eye-catching, but we can't seem to make an inviting window. Any ideas? The comments you all make in each Hearth Digest are very helpful. She's stocking it with snacks, beer, wine, soft drinks and deserts ..... and expects all members of this list to stop by and meet each other. So, this is your offical and personal invitation. If you are reading this message, and if you are going to Charlotte, we would love to say hello. 2. From: Jim Butchart <[email protected]> Organization: The Fireplace People @ Hearth & Color Shop MIME-Version: 1.0 To: hearth list <[email protected]> Subject: CFM, Majestic, VC A few posts back, Tim Nissen was curious about CFM, their products, and where they were traded (stock). This is a pretty slow responce to that but I'm more inclined now to give my impressions of that company. (I have an ax to grind in other words) For the last two years CFM (Insta-Flame) has been my number one gas vendor and my number two vendor for total purchases. They have a very deep product line. Lots of DV fireplace models, trim options, freestanding models, inserts.. the whole package. Very few problems. In three years I have replaced two blowers and one valve. The problem I now face is that since they acquired Majestic, CFM released all of their reps and gave the complete sales responsibility to Majestic. So today I found that Majestic is referring inquires of Insta-flame buyers in my area code to the Majestic distributor in my town, a sheetmetal shop. They apparently don't know I exist even though I buy at distributor levels. This past fall I remodeled my store around eight of their fireplaces and inserts complete with custom mantels. This weekend I have a 20 x 30 outside burn display at a homeshow where CFMs products are featured... and I don't know right now if I can even buy from them. I've been told I have to wait until the show to get any info on pricing and early-buy opportunities. So I now have over night competition from low ballers and my showroom will be theirs as well. Hello all, and welcome back (for those who went). I'll not waste a lot of email space with all details about the show...but I would like submissions on what folks thought was hot, etc......I will incorporate these submissions into a long piece that will be places in the members only section. My personal impression of the show: 1. Not too much new....just everyone continuing to jump on the gas products bandwagon and improve their existing products. 2. Strong feeling (heard comments from folks talking) that "2/3's of the exhibitors here will be out of business soon"....I guess folks are thinking about the consolidations and oversupply of gas products. 3. Revolutionary talk from Retailers..overheard " getting together in buying group" "won't buy from brand X, cause they are selling thru different channels" and other such talk....remains to be seen where it's going, but if I was a manufacturer, I would be concerned. By the way, the Netheads party was real cool, and we probably had 30 to 35 folks there at all times of the evening..we even had a guitar and harmonica...now , what other party had Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix live ? My thanks to Ken (at Direct Fire) for the suggestion. Further reports and suggestions as I receive them. Craig

1. What was up in Charlotte ? (Jim Butchart) > I would like submissions on what folks thought was hot, etc.... What was hot? Not the weather. Down right brisk for us wimpy Californians. But the sun was out and there were a lot of smiling faces. Wasn't Charlette a "neat!" city? I was impressed! As far as the show went... I thought the seminar selection was terrific. I came home with a bunch of tapes because I couldn't attend nearly as many sessions as I would have liked. Part of the duties of being a rep is putting in time at booth(s!). Part of the duties of a retailer is scouting product at a lot of booths! So I put in a lot of hours on my feet and have the blisters and tons of literature to prove it. I love the shows! It was good to see a bunch of you at the Gathering of the Netheads. It was a kick to meet Craig for the first time even though he and I have been working on the HPA website together. Just another magical element of the InterNet when two guys three thousand miles apart, on opposite coasts, can put a website together in a matter of a few weeks. No phone calls. No snailmail. Another thing I learned at the show was the fact that there are a LOT of folks monitoring this group without offering any input or response. A verbal response apparently works for them. I recieved a few. Mostly good. From one a message was relayed that my comments were not appreciated. I will reserve my comments about loyalty and turning your back on the little guys that put you on the map. All in all I had a great time schmoozing. I had a downright lousy time with my flights however. A total of six flights because of missed connections in both directions. It could have been seven flights but I missed the last one so I got a bus ride instead! And to top it off they lost my luggage both ways as well.
