In my previous posting (Hearth Digest 494 I believe) I mispelled Kozy
Heat as Kozi Heat.
 
I was refering to Kozy Heat, the Minnesota built fireplace line that
sells into specialty hearth distribution. I don't know much about Kozi
Heat, the Canadian manufacturer.
 
Thank you Jay Hanson (the Northern California rep for Kozy Heat) for
correcting me.

You are the expert, not the architect. An 18" chimney is overkill for
practically any residential application.  Although you can purchase it =
from
the industrial division of various manufacturers, you would do better to
establish the correct diameter for the usage, rather than an architect
picking the largest size out of his Sweet's catalogue.

If you need the 18" diameter chimney immediately and cannot find it 
closer to you, we do stock Industrial Chimney (ICC), UL103HT (2100 F) 
in 304SS/304SS inner/outer and galvalume outer casing. All SS is 
recommended for coastal conditions. If you need help confirming the 
flue size, give us the fireplace dimensions, including height and 
width of the opening and the height from lintel bar to the flue top, 
as well as offsets if any. We normally stock ICC 6" - 20" and have 
sold even larger diameters.

WE don't want to go that way...it's the way the job was drawn by the
architect, and the builder just wants us to submit a bid as it is drawn. =
If
he gets the job, then we talk about the correct way to do things. Whatever
we do, surely the cost will be covered by the amount of the original bid
with 18"!

Our Metalbestos distributor says that Metalbestos divides its products =
into
commercial and residential, and our distributor is not permitted to
distribute the commercial, which is what 18" is considered to be.
Metalbestos gave us leads on distributors we could call for the commercial
product, but all those leads were dead ends.
 
We have been in touch with ICC and I think we'll be able to work something
out with their product.

Regarding 18 inch Class A Chimney....
