I would like a high efficiency unit, but not for it's low emissions, because I've found that our outdoor fireplace is useless when it gets cold. A high efficiency outdoor fireplace with lots of radiant heat would be nice to have on cold nights, even though you couldn't roast marshmallows or popcorn in it. My guess is that we will never see a low emissions/high efficiency version because of the development costs for such a limited SKU. And, reality is, why should you care about clean burning outdoor fireplaces anyway. If our federal government doesn't care, why should we care? They don't care about the massive air pollution that they create in our region by deliberately wasting millions of cords of usable firewood each year in their huge, incredibly polluting slash burns in our nearby forests. They have no programs to promote harvesting of this valuable biomass = resource (which will also help with our energy shortage). In fact, each year they are doing the opposite by making it even more difficult to harvest firewood. Hay, I ought to be able to burn 1/4 cord a year of that same waste in my = dirty burning, outdoor fireplace since our federal government is doing the same thing, but on an incredibly more massive scale. Craig, if you want to have a "no visible smoke" outdoor fireplace right now, all you have to do is to install a gas log lighter in a current outdoor fireplace and keep it set very low while you're burning wood. I've found that the slight temperature boost from the log lighter will eliminate almost all smoke = from our outdoor fireplace. Also the firebox stays clean and the chimney stays exceptionally clean. I doubt the gas will do that without using a ton of (now expensive) gas. A clean burning model would also provide better visuals. Sure, the EPA does not care...but my wife and the neighbors do. They dislike smoke drifting into their windows. Let's hope some manufacturer takes care of this niche market. By the way, the poll on the front page of HearthNet shows that 75% of our reader would buy (58%)....or already have (16%), an outdoor fireplace. Surely a market that needs some more work! -- ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------
