Just tacking a Lightning Rod to the pipe = won't give your customer the protection he seeks. All metal items that protrude from the roof must be bonded into such a system. Air terminals must be spaced no more than 20' apart on the ridge. Water, gas, electrical and = phone systems must all be tied into such a system. Proper surge suppression devices must be installed also. Lightning enters the home space from above (the sky) as we all know, = but it also enters from the earth. There's a lot more to Lightning Protection than most laypeople realize.   John Wharton CSIA # 1069 LPI # 1040 Morristown TN     ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: "Hearth Email List" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 11, 2001 8:35 PM Subject: Hearthlist Digest #606 - 05/11/01     Hearthlist Digest #606 - Friday, May 11, 2001   Lightning by <[email protected]>
(back) Subject: Lightning From: <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 11:42:32 -0400   I had a question asked by one of our customers that I wasn't sure how to answer as yet. I could just research it and give him a more technical answer but = I thought I would throw it out to all the experts out there. He is having = one of our direct vent gas units installed by a propane company. He is using GS vent, straight up,flashed to a metal roof attached to a metal stove in an area that is subject to a lot of storms. What is his risk of a bolt hitting this system and destroying his home and ......?Is a lightning rod attached to the vent = going to help? I am sure this must have been brought up before and I wanted to tell him what others have done. Any help would be appreciated.
