I just received a call about soot being found on the undersides of doorways, and on the carpet beneath it, and around the registers for their central heating system, but there is no soot anywhere on their vent-free logs or in the firebox. We have not yet visited this home since receiving this call. However, shortly after they first began to use the logset last fall, we corrected a previous sooting problem obviously due to someone having rearrranged the logs. The homeowner admitted to using candles, but not very often. Since their is no soot in the firebox, could their problem be due to the candles? Any suggestions about what to look for when we go to this home? (Ceiling fan use has already been ruled out, and the pressure has already been checked by her gas co, and found to be OK.) (back) Subject: Soot From: "Craig Issod" <[email protected]> Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 09:23:11 -0400 Is their an attached garage? I seem to remember that studies showed this and candles are often the problem. However, vent-free can also be the cause, even if it's not the logs themselves. Other materials like carpet, paint, etc can outgas and this brew can cause soot to settle in different places. Even if the vent free is innocent, the air current set up by it can aggravate the problem. We had a similar situation where the appliance was a wood fireplace insert...and I can assure you that it was not leaking smoke. Only thing I could think of was that it stirred up the (already existing) soup. -- ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------
