(back) Subject: Our Retail Sales Policy Change From: <[email protected]> Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 20:20:42 -0500 No More Cash & Carry Logs For Us! We've had a recent episode with the improper customer installation of a vented gas log set that needs sharing. The episode confirmed my worst fears about how easy and tempting it is for customers to install vented logs like vent free logs. Not only is this a huge safety risk, but it=92s a guaranteed =93soot the house up=94 problem. This particular vented log set provided our cash & carry customer with 75,000 BTU of blazing, vent free heat, lots of headaches and lots of soot on the walls for several months. It even took us three follow-up phone calls to convince the customer that we had to get into their house and fix their problem. Homeowners can very easily install vented gas logs improperly and run them with the damper closed. It's no doubt tempting because they do heat like =93blazes=94 with the damper fully closed. It seems that this kind of = a risk is much higher and more serious than a homeowner installation of a stove. We=92ll loose a few log set sales to those cash & carry customers. And, yes, even after we install their log sets with damper locks, customers can easily convert their dampers back to being fully closable. At this point, it's prudent for us to let cash & carry, vented log sets be something that the Big Boxes can specialize in. It=92s those Big Boxes have the deep pockets, anyway. Comments? Of course they are! Tho' many such instances are no doubt ignorant consumers who want a cheap but interesting-looking door which they learn they can pick up from JC Penney or other mass merchandiser, I bet we all know of so-called "reputable dealers" who have been selling them to unsuspecting customers for years...at least in my neck of the woods (so FL), where the rationale is, "No one uses his fireplace much anyway so what's the harm?" Or, if the consumer is informed of the danger, he rationalizes, "Oh, I'll just remember to always leave the doors open when I'm burning." Noel Gilmore Autumn Moon Fireplaces
(back) Subject: Mark Stevens From: "Noel Gilmore" <[email protected]> Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 20:22:14 -0500 For those of you who dealt with him, you might want to know that Mark Stevens, of Mark Stevens Industries, was murdered February 22 in Oregon by a disgruntled employee/tenant. If you are interested in the details, there's a newspaper story here: http://news.statesmanjournal.com/single_article.cfm?i=3D20406&admin=3D1 We found out when my husband called to make an order. The gal on the phone said that the business was expected to continue without Mark. Noel Gilmore Autumn Moon Fireplaces
(back) Subject: Mark Stevens From: "Gordon Vavrek" <[email protected]> Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 20:26:17 -0500 I first met Mark in 1979 at a Home show in Salem, Oregon. He had a booth there with a wood burning stove he "was working on." He literally had a welding machine in the booth and was still working on a prototype he hadn't finished before the show, so thought that he might as well come down as a work in progress. He had on the clothes of a guy in the middle of a welding project, complete with helmet, gloves, and holes in shirt, pants, and that goofy looking hat that welders wear. I stopped by his booth along with a throng of others that where dangerously being messmerized by that little blue tip at the end of an arc welding rod. He had no signs up that warned of the dangers of watching this process unprotected, and just welded away. Every so often he would look up notice the people and answer questions and tell of this new design in wood stoves he was inventing right there in front of them. He had take a standard box stove and added a thin narrow steel baffle (that was removeable) right below the flue outlet. He would tell how this would slow down the burn rate and make your wood last longer. After listening to him I introduced myself, and invited him over to our booth. We were at one of our very first shows with the Kent Tile Fire from New Zealand, and as most who are reading this know that it was way ahead of where Mark was and worked like a Champ. It was kind of like Orrville and Wilbur seeing an F16 at Kittyhawk just before they took off in there new flyin We became friends at that show and would regularly challenge each others memory about that event and several others we experianced together over the years. I will truly miss Mark, as will all of you. He was always on the, do what ever it takes to help a guy out side of things. He was one of a kind and this industry as well as the one I am now involved in could use more people like him around. Mark, I will miss You. Gordon Vavrek

Personally, I am pissed, more than saddened, as I am definitely going to miss my phone conversations with Big Guy, not to mention his endless funny stories and (Mostly Dirty) jokes. He is the only man that has ever phoned me, and his opening line was always, "Gary, this is Mark, are you with a customer?" That was his first concern, MY BUSINESS. Mark was my friend of over 20 years, and not only was he a proven and unrepentant rebel, (my kind of guy), he tended to leave good "stuff" in his wake, as he plowed through life like a battleship. I remember when he was "Not re-invited" to the Salem State Fair. (He burned his booth down), and as he told me, when he was a bouncer at the Pendelton Rodeo in the 60's, and rather than confront, (and have to seriously damage a drunk cowboy), he took off his brand new $60.00 Stetson, stomped the hell out of it, walked up to the belligerant cowpoke and his two mean looking friends, and said" Well, I feel a hell of a lot better, how about you?" Mark was a one of a kind, and I am going to miss him a lot. How about some "Mark Stevens Stories" as a way to say Aloha Mark, it's been a hell of a ride. (back) Subject: Particulate emissions measured from certified woodstoves From: "Craig Issod" <[email protected]> Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 10:06:20 -0500 Posted by "Jim Gillam" <[email protected]> --- Particulate emissions measured from certified woodstoves after years of = use in the real world don't match the laboratory-derived numbers for those same = stove models when they were certified, according to an EPA-sponsored study = released in December. =DDIn most cases they are higher. =DDThey are still far below = the emissions of uncertified stoves recorded in similar tests. But in an exclusive report in the March issue of SNEWS - The Chimney = Sweep's Newsmagazine, an analysis of the EPA's study shows that, with = conscientious operation and regular service by a competent professional chimney sweep, certified woodstoves after years of use DO nearly match their lab certification values. This news will be important to stove manufacturers, because it suggests = that with conscientious operation and proper maintenance certified woodstoves = can perform for many years as intended and advertised. The news will be important to regulators, because it shows that certified stoves, even after years of use, do achieve significant reductions in particulate emissions compared with uncertified stoves, and that smoke emissions can be reduced further with conscientious operation and proper maintenance. And it is important to sweeps, because (to my knowledge) it is the first "scientific" indication that chimney sweeps have an important role to play = in ensuring that certified woodstoves work as they are supposed to in the = real world. The full report is in the March issue of SNEWS, the only independent trade journal for chimney and venting professionals in North America. =DDA = year's subscription to SNEWS (10 issues) is $89 for first class delivery or air = mail to Canada, or $79 for bulk rate delivery in the USA only. =DD If you would like to subscribe, send me an e-mail (privately -- [email protected]) with your name, company name, and postal address, and we'll send you this issue and an invoice. =DDPlease pay the = bill promptly, and we'll start your subscription with the following issue. = =DDThe March issue will be yours to keep, with no obligation. =DD Jim Gillam editor SNEWS -- The Chimney Sweep's Newsmagazine www.snewsmagazine.com
