(back) Subject: suggestions wanted From: "Noel Gilmore" <[email protected]> Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 13:15:29 -0500   Customer wants a "free-standing" fireplace for a mobile home in which he can burn Dura-Flame type logs. Malm units do not appear to be mobile-home approved. VC stoves can be, but one is not supposed to burn anything but wood in them. He cannot have gas in his mobile home park, and he definitely doesn't want electric. Any other suggestions?   Noel Gilmore Autumn Moon Fireplaces
(back) Subject: and another thing... From: "Noel Gilmore" <[email protected]> Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 13:15:47 -0500   I gather that those of us in hurricane-prone areas are beginning to hear from our building depts. that flues and chases now have to either be certified to withstand 110 mph winds by the manufacturer or by an engineer (that's the certification by the manufacturer, not the wind by the manufacturer). So when we tell our customers they need to pull a permit = for existing home installations of pre-fab fireplaces or stoves, the building dept. tells them that they need this certification for the flue exiting = the roof with a flashing. Am I correct in assuming that no one's Class A chimney system carries such a guarantee?   If this is so, it really puts us out of the business of doing existing = home installations unless the customer is willing to pay both for the chase to be built AND for an engineer to approve the plan. We put our license in jeopardy if we do an install without the home owner having pulled a = permit.   Does anyone believe that manufacturers would go to the trouble of = achieving this certification for those few states (FL, maybe the Carolinas, I've heard) currently requiring it?   Noel
