(back) Subject: Home Depot From: Jeff Palmer <[email protected]> Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 17:34:11 -0600   For what it's worth, just a couple of observations: While in Waterloo Iowa this past week, I stopped into The Home Depot to check out their operation. Three years ago, when the store was new, I was very impressed. It was fairly neat and organized, but the help was very sub-par. This trip into the same store was a real eye opener. The entire place was trashy, disorganized, and just plain filthy. I was not able to figure out how good the salespeople were, as the hour that I was at the store, nobody talked to me!!! The only semi-alarming aspect that I noticed was that their Timberline brand looked awful close to the Majestic brand. Upon getting closer to the units, I noticed that each and every Timberline unit had glass on it that had the Majestic logo on it. So much for Majestic going to market through the mass merchants with a different brand name. I can see why all of you Majestic people are fed up. Good luck to all and see you in St. Louis. JP

(back) Subject: Re: Hearthlist Digest #59 - 11/20/97 From: John Gulland <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 13:50:33 -0500   >Re: Global Warming > >If you buy into this hysteria (which I do not) isn't carbon dioxide supposed >to be part of this "problem"? (green house effect. blah blah). I want to be >able to cater to believers and non believers alike customizing my sales >techniques to address each and everyone's "fears" without regard to my own >opinions. This is basically a wood versus gas issue and I want to be on both >sides for maximum sell....if you have some good selling tips please let me >know...no nastygrams PLEASE! > >Phil >The Lucky Sweeps >So. Lake Tahoe, CA >   Gee, Phil, first you label all of us who take the global warming issue seriously as hysterics, then you plead for no nastygrams. I'm not so sure you can have it both ways.   As a hysteric, I figure I'm in pretty good company; 2000 of the world's senior scientists, most of the world's governments, and even some very big corporations that have a lot to loose as attempts are made to cut greenhouse gas emissions all agree that we are heading for trouble and that action is needed on global warming. The coal, oil and gas industries don't agree, which is about as surprising as the tobacco industry doubting cancer research findings.   Good sales people are well informed and their clients sense that they are sincere in what they say. You may have some work to do on both counts in order to be credible on the global warming front.   If you are interested, here is some reading: http://www.pathfinder.com:80/fortune/1997/971208/int.html http://www.pathfinder.com:80/fortune/1997/971208/the.html http://www.wood-heat.com/gwrant.htm   The issue of global warming/climate change and the related issue of cuts in greenhouse gas emissions are extremely relevant to the hearth industry, regardless of your favorite fuel. I would welcome a serious dialogue on this list if any other hysterics are interested.   Regards, John This is for business: http://www.gulland.ca This is for pleasure: http://www.wood-heat.com
