A customer complained of soot on his walls about a year later after a vent free log was (properly) installed in his masonry fireplace in his = basement.   We checked it out and found nothing out of order, nothing even suspect. Damper had been closed and not opened since. (I have found problems = before from the customer opening and closing the damper and debris dropping from = the (dirty) flue onto the logs. But, this was not the case.)   Upon closer inspection, we wiped the wall with a paper towel and sure = enough, a brown film was all over the wall surface. But the gas log was not malfunctioning!!   Any ideas so far????   Here's what we found out..... It turned out the customer was a heavy smoker and the smoke had mixed with the water vapor and condensed on the wall. So it was not soot after all = and we were exonerated! The tipoff was the brown color of the "soot"....not what you would expect from gas combustion.   Tony Palmer   --=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D_-1237887459=3D=3D_ma=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Content-Type: text/enriched; charset=3D"us-ascii"   Thought I would share this with the group.   A customer complained of soot on his walls about a year later after a vent   free log was (properly) installed in his masonry fireplace in his basement.     We checked it out and found nothing out of order, nothing even suspect.   Damper had been closed and not opened since. Will the customer stop smoking or having guests smoke in their home?   We've now been told:   1. 90% + of vent-free are oversized 2. Don't use them to heat your home 3. Don't buy them if anyone in family is very sensitive 4. Problems could occur if a smoker is in the home 5. Watch out for pet hair and other dust 6. Do not use unattended or while sleeping   and much more.....   When all is said and done, a very small % of the population will be accurately qualified to have one of these appliances.   Comments?   ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------   ------------------------------------------------------ --=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D_-1237887242=3D=3D_ma=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Content-Type: text/enriched; charset=3D"us-ascii"   At 3:10 PM -0500 11/14/00, [email protected] wrote:   <excerpt>Upon closer inspection, we wiped the wall with a paper towel and sure enough,   a brown film was all over the wall surface.   But the gas log was not malfunctioning!!     Any ideas so far????     Here's what we found out.....   It turned out the customer was a heavy smoker and the smoke had mixed with   the water vapor and condensed on the wall.
