The latest issue of Butane-Propane News (BPN) has two large articles on
hearth.  One article is about LP dealers and LP retail marketers partnering
- not competing - with hearth dealers.  And the  second article was about
the planned opening of the first in a series  Hearth USA superstores owned
by UGI Corp. The LP dealers'  magazine has so many hearth products
advertised in it that I thought I had picked up a copy of a new Village
West publication.
 
UGI Corp.the owner of Hearth USA  Inc. also owns 58% of AmeriGas Partners
LP, the nations largest retail propane marketer.  The company plans to open
two stores this year in Rockville, MD and Springfield, VA. ..... and two in
greater Philadelphia in 2000 to "evaluate the market potential, consumer's
product preferences, and customer traffic and will refine it's service
model before the 2001 roll out."  The superstore concept is will consist of
24,000 sq ft facilities selling hearth products, spas, grills and patio
accessories.  As indicated in the article: <Superstores have come to
dominate their categories in recent years and have become "category
killers" that eliminate smaller competitors in their market areas in many
cases.>
 
"The pro typical Hearth USA superstore will showcase more than 100 hearth
appliances and 35 grill models, and will offer a complete display of high
quality spas and accessories."
 
It was reported that  "Hearth USA  has entered into marketing arrangements
with ..... FPI/ Regency, Hearthstone, Heatilator, Majestic, Robert H.
Peterson, and Tulikivi..." at this time. "... the stores are expected to
feature pretty much all the leading brand names..."

What ever happened to the Home Depot Expo stores??  I lost track of the watch.
