It is now official... New York has a regulation > approving vent-free space heaters. > See the regulation at http://www.hearthassoc.org/depts/NYSREG71.html on the > HPA website. > Jim Butchart > [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~ In advance I would like to say Sorry to anyone the following might offend...... but I do not see how a Vent-Free appliance can be safe to install into a home atmosphere.???? These appliance are not vent-free, the house becomes the vent and all the products of combustion will vent INTO the home and thus may cause problems with the homeowners. Especially if their home is air tight (R2000 homes). CO Poisoning is the onething I fear the most will befall the unaware homeowners. It is a silent killer that has symptoms resembling the flu or a cold. Many do not know when they are suffering from it. Most vent free appliances are labelled as "decorative appliances" but we all know that homeowners will use them as heaters and burn them far longer than recommended. Unlike wood units (you can smell them when they are not drafting well and can shut them down) gas fired appliances do not emit tell tale odors unless the problem is at the supply line. I personally feel that the US States should disallow their usage or at least educate their retailers on how to sell these units and what to tell their clients. Again this is only one persons opinion but I know lots of people in the hearth industry who feel this way. Regards, Y. Aube Ontario, Canada
