(back) Subject: Pirates of Silicon Valley From: Craig Issod <[email protected]> Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 17:13:13 -0400   The Steve Jobs / Bill Gates saga "Pirates of Silicon Valley" will be showing tonite (Sunday) and all during the next week on TNT. It's probably worth seeing from a business AND technology point of view. Thanks to Jim Butchart for reminding us of this showing.   I just watched "You've got Mail" on Video - sort of cute, but there is a message in there about big box stores knocking out ma and pa shops...and the movie does not show this in a bad light - but in sort of a "moving on" type of scenario.   Heck, I love internet shopping and "big box" stores as much as any frugal customer..but there is defintely room in our industry for all three selling methods. One caveat, though - those with specialty shops DO have to hone their chops, fix up their stores, install new displays, educated themselve and staff and present GREAT customer service to survive and prosper.   Customers no longer HAVE to buy off your store. They can open the yellow pages or get on the net and find other stores and sources of just about anything. Award winning service, along with good inventory and displays will probably cause 80% of them not to go that far.     ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------   ------------------------------------------------------
