But this could turn into a forum for us all to say congrats to our reps as this goes on. I like the idea of longer hours for the show not necessary a longer show. Polly
(back) Subject: Re:Trade Show Hours From: Roger Sanders <[email protected]> Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 22:01:07 -0400   Improving the trade show is a good subject. Hope the HPA Trade Show Committee is reading all these postings.   It seems that a high percentage of retailers want more quality time on the show floor. Mark Ludeman's suggestions of adding a show day and starting education sessions a day earlier is a good one to consider. Extending the show time on Friday night to 9PM is also a good one to consider.   =46rom a personal point of view, I don't think I could spend quality time at every booth, even if I had 10 days. After three days it all starts running together, the reps get tired just like the buyers do, and we all seem ready to go home.   It seems that a alternative solution, on an individual buyer basis, is to be able to better prioritize your time so you don't waste time in booths that are less important to you. This can be done without extending show hours.   The problem is that we really don=92t know much about what is in a particular booth until we spend 5 or 10 minutes in one, and many times, waste everyone=92s time in the process.   Each year I make a list of booths, booth numbers and items to talk about. The problem with this process is that=92s hard to know much about what is actually going to be in the booths, so I usually miss some important items, while I spend too much time elsewhere. Later that month I find out from others that I missed some really good stuff.   An improvement would be to give buyers much better information so they can better prioritize their time on the floor, while reps don=92t waste time on low probability show contacts.   This seems to be another classic information issue that computers could help with. HPA could easily request a much more complete description of booth contents and show specials from vendors (in a digital format).   The data could then be compiled and printed, plus it could even be posted to the HPA web site in a searchable database format and be downloadable.   Better yet, we might even get vendors to be listed in an HPA trade show digital magazine (CD) at $100 or so for a one page listing. (These CDs could be sold to a good percentage of buying entities for $19.95 with their advanced show registration) The CD would also be a great way for buyers to review what they saw in the booths as they get back to their offices and begin making final buying decisions.   There are certainly issues involving both timeliness and the expanded access to manufacturer information.   Craig, what do you think?     Roger Sanders =46ireside Spa & Patio Bend, OR

But, CD-ROM Video with a sales presentation of the product line would be quite another thing.   Travis did this with a homegrown video a few years ago....Well, the wheels are turning anyway..thanks for the suggestion.   By the way, did anyone on the list grab a copy of the CD offered by the Danish company Krog Iversen? Way Cool! - it lets you see the different color stoves and backgounds just by clicking a button. Defintely designer stuff.       ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------   ------------------------------------------------------
(back) Subject: RE:HPA SHow Hours From: "Condar Company" <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 11:29:15 -0400   Having attended the last four HPA shows with our manufacturing company, I agree the hours spent with Retailers at this once a year function is priceless. I would like to see added Thursday hours 1:00 TO 7:00, extend Friday night til 7:00, then leave Saturday and Sunday as is. That would be like adding another whole day to our schedule, (8 hours). I think that the educational sessions should begin on Monday and go through Wednesday and not have so many of them conflicting with show hours. Marilyn Homer of Condar Company
(back) Subject: ODS Explained From: Craig Issod <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 16:08:37 -0400   I'm writing an article on how gas appliances work, and need some help on ODS.   Although I've read a bunch about them, none of the literature actually describes what I want to know..that is, the actual mechanical process that takes place to make the valve shut down.   I know the pilot becomes unstable and lifts off the thermocouple, but exactly how?   I'm sure the bimetallic element along the pilot tube body has something to do with closing the mixing air off to the pilot, but am not sure why...exactly how does a drop in room oxygen make this happen?   Would someone set us straight on the tech details?     ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------   ------------------------------------------------------
