(back) Subject: Two good-byes, a question and a surprise From: [email protected] (Daniel J B Melcon) Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 09:31:38 -0400 Two good-byes, a question and a surprise Craig, I haven't heard any mention that we are losing a couple of the people that have helped make the industry a pleasurable place to work. I'd like to tip my hat to them as they exit stage left. Dan Melcon Norwich, Vermont 1. Shy and Retiring Dave Johnston, the longtime editor of Alternative Energy Retailer, was seen leaving the Phoenix airport astride a hobby horse. While he claimed it was for a grandchild, it is also a sign that he is riding into the sunset. Dave let on to a handful of people that he will be retiring; April 23 is his last day. It is typical of Dave's low key style to downplay his departure. Even though I write for a different publication, I think the world of him. In addition to wearing many other hats for Zackin Publications, Dave has always been a thoughtful, positive member of the hearth industry, and a decent guy to boot. While I am sure that Patricia Donohue, his replacement, will do a fine job, his voice will be missed. If you want to catch him before he heads out of town, his e-mail address is [email protected] 2. Auld Lang Syne I had breakfast this morning with Pat Moynihan, former president of Waterford Irish Stoves. His last day is also April 23. As is inevitable when acquisitions occur, things have changed since FPI (Regency) purchased Waterford a few months ago. They have moved the cast operation from Lebanon, New Hampshire to company headquarters in British Columbia. Patrick put heart and soul into Waterford for a dozen years, and was largely responsible for their success to date. I wish Pat well, and hope he doesn't disappear from Stoveland. 3. Hot Air Goes Down (Golf Ball Flies Too Far) Now that spring is here, the problem has gone away. However, I would still like to come up with a solution for a friend who had a terrible time getting her fire started. The problem was a draft of cold air coming down the exterior chimney (sufficiently strong to blow out a couple of matches). Even if you cracked a window and started newspaper or cedar kindling, smoke would billow into the room until there was sufficient heat to overcome the downdraft. Besides a hair dryer into the combustion air inlet, are there other ideas? 4. Live in Phoenix It was a surprise and a delight to see Roger Charron in Phoenix. As many people know, things looked pretty bleak for the longtime industry member (and HPA prez) last fall, but Roger appears to be on the mend. It was good to see his irrepressible character and sense of humor were intact. Roger is back in Maine, and would love to hear from industry friends. He's at P.O. Box 181, Turner, ME 04282.
