(back) Subject: Chat Bugs From: Craig Issod <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 00:29:57 -0400   My thanks to those who attempted to enter the chat room last evening. We learned a bunch about the chat program...some of which I'll share here.   A number of users failed to enter the room... here's some reasons and solutions:   The Chat program is written in the Java computer language. The versions of Java which are embedded in the older versions of Internet Browsers are often buggy...i.e. do not work correctly. So, here's the fixes...   1. Mac and PC users - Upgrade to the most current verion of Internet browsers.... Netscape 4.0+ and Internet Explorer 4+. This should solve most problems as these browsers have a current version of Java installed.   2. The simple, easy fast way - Go around the problem. The chat server can be connected to without even using a browser. You can use a method know as TELNET, which is simply a terminal session over the Internet. This is very fast and works every time. You simply fire up a telnet program (more below) and open a connection to chi.hearth.com. You'll be given instructions from there...you can type /help for a list of commands.   PC - You can find dozens of Windows telnet programs at shareware.com. I tried one shareware version at http://www.anzio.com and it worked great.   Mac - You can download either NCSA Telnet or Better Telnet at http://www/shareware.com or any Mac Archive.   AOL...A telnet program (I think) exists somewhere within the AOL browser...does anyone know more about this?   ALL..Once you install your telnet program, open a new connection to chi.hearth.com. Hit return and enter your nickname in the fashion: /nick Craig would sign me on as Craig   and take it from there.   Until we can get a couple dozen of us on successfully, we will limit our sessions to informal test encounters. I will hang in the room when I am online....and will try to check in at 10PM each evening that I am around (Eastern Time). Anyone else can feel free to meet their friends there..etc.   I will also place a link on the CHAT page for current news, instructions and information concerning the chat. Thanks for the help...and please: Let me know if you are unable to connect using the newer browsers.         ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------ Buddha says "avoid error" ------------------------------------------------------
