Hearthlist Digest #137 - Wednesday, April 15, 1998 Chat Room Trial by "Craig Issod" <[email protected]>
(back) Subject: Chat Room Trial From: Craig Issod <[email protected]> Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 21:29:10 -0400 Dear Fellow Netheads, I've really enjoyed moderating this list for the past two years. We have shared insights, knowledge and ...yes, even rumors ! Most importantly we have learned from each other. Email is a great way for us to communicate most of our thoughts. However, I have been considering an expansion into a "classroom" type senario. This would take the form of a "chat" room, but not a free-form one...one where we would have "Special Guests" or groups of guests (at a certain time or place), and then anyone could come in and ask them question about the subject at hand. This could be a great way of meeting in cyberspace. As a "proof of concept", I'd like to test a chat server I have installed at HearthNet. This is a very simple chat room, you simply go to the site and log in with a "nickname". For beginners, I would prefer that we all use our real names...this is not one of THOSE OTHER chat rooms (I can see the headline now...wife of hearth shop owner leaves home and business for torid affair with R&D specialist she met at the HearthNet chat room :-) ). Anyway, the chat server is located at http://chi.hearth.com/chat/chat.html You will need a Java-enabled browser, such as Netscape 3 or newer...or IE 3.0 or newer. I'm not sure if America Online browser supports the Java language, so I'd appreciate any reports on whether you can connect. You can visit the server anytime just to see how it work. The first conference will be held tommorrow evening, Thursday, April 16, at 10:00 PM Eastern Time. This will allow you left coast types to get home from work. The subject of this test conference, should anybody attend, will be "Web Page and Graphic Creation"..that is, I'll be available for Q and A on this subject. Don't miss it...if it works, you'll be part of history..the first ever Hearth Industry Educational Chat. I'm not yet sure how many users the current setup will handle, but please show up if you can so we can test this. ------------------------------------------------------ Craig Issod HearthNet at http://www.hearth.com [email protected] Everything your Hearth Desires ------------------------------------------------------ Buddha says "avoid error" ------------------------------------------------------
