The Woodpecker you refer to is probably a Yellow shafted Flicker or a close relative. This woodpecker is unique to the family as it has spots on it's belly and not stripes.   The good news is he will probably get some (sexual) satisfaction from his display at some point, and become bored with the whole affair.   Noise is his objective at this time. Flickers will pound on metal roofs, chimney caps and anything else up high and loud. Typically just after sunrise. In the north(Northern Vermont)where we are, this is pretty common. This is certainly not your fault.   Perhaps a piece of screen, or a sound deadener would ruin his fun long enough for him to move on. (A large alley cat will also work.)   Good luck, keep pecking for answers. Dave Kuhfahl HearthStone cc:hearthlist
