Hi all, new to the forum. I have been restoring a defiant encore model 0028. When I put the new front door gaskets in I cannot get the doors closed tight enough to latch the handle. I used the recommended 5/16 diameter rope and the handle is turned in all the way. Also the stove is in very good shape, no warping etc. Anyone have any experience with this? thanks

Did you clean out the gasket channel completely before installing the gasket?

Did you make sure to route the gasket around the doors just like it was before? It can be a little hard to tell in a few places on the encore. I've also seen where too much cement was used and it soaked into the gasket making it solid. Make sure that didn't happen.

That's a possibility. Low and high density is available. Might be best to just buy a gasket kit from VC. Your local hearth shop should have them, if not you could order it online.

True. not all gasketing is created equal. As there is no other adjustment you can make (wierd design flaw, don't you think?) Gotta try a diff. rope. Also, clean gasket channel means CLEAN gasket channel. Doesn't take much on these guys to muck it up. Good luck!!
