My Somerset stash is running low and I need to resupply for the upcoming heating season.

I have not used any of the brands that are now available in this area. Any experiences or comments that you can offer on these types of pellets are appreciated.

EMBER HEARTH $242 / TON

GREENWAY $226 / TON

ULTRA FIBER ENERGY $198 / TON

HEAT RESOURCE $196 / TON

OZARK OAKS $190 / TON

Sorry, I've never heard of any of those brands. You can't get any more Somersets?

For the last 5 yrs I've bought Somersets from this place. When I called to re-order some they said they wont be getting any in this season.

Lowes carries Greenway's and Home Depot will be getting in Maine Woods brand.

They burn so clean, you forget how to clean your stove!
Good Luck

Sounds like a good deal.

Just checked local Lowes.

Greenways $251 per ton and $79 Delivery charge within 25 miles. They do offer a 10% military discount on the pellets only.

So... getting back to my original question concerning has anyone had experience with or rating the pellet choices that I have locally.

Greenways were the best I used last year. Just pretty dusty, but burned great. Tried 3 or 4 other brands, but green ways topped them all

That's 2 votes for Greenways. Thanks for the reply.

Pellets are like food, everyone has their own preference and taste. I may swear by a pellet that you end up disliking. The only way you are going to know for sure is to try them. Get a few bags of each and see which ones suit you best.

Absolutely true, but an objective evaluation is not really possible this time of year.

CASE CLOSED! :cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Just bought 4 tons of SOMERSETS @ $218 a ton ($4.36 per bag) + $45 delivery. All set for old man winter now.

Where did you find the somersets?

Nixa Hardware & Seed Co., Nixa Mo. Their recent mailer didn't mention Somersets at all. I asked the guy at the service counter which of the pellets available were comparable to Somersets since I have had such good luck with that brand. He said they in fact had Somersets but didn't advertise it. In the past I have bought two stoves from them and all my pellets. Great place to do business. They have been around since 1899 so apparently they are doing something right. I'm thinking they cut me some serious slack on the delivery charge because I'm a repeat customer. Most other places around here charge between $60 -$80 depending on quantity ordered and delivery distance.

thats good to know I just bought a stove from them.I got a couple tons of the ember hearth pellets now just have to finish getting it in.

Without exception, every pellet variety I've burned that has been oak-based has been excellent - there are great softwood pellets too, of course, but for hardwood, I think oak takes the prize. IMHO, species is important in pellets. From their web site, it looks like they're blending white oak, red oak, and hickory - sounds good to me! If I were you, I'd at least buy a few bags of the Ozark Oaks and see what they do, especially at that price. Never heard of them, but they look legit. Can't tell until you burn 'em.

Coming up will be my fourth year burning Greenway's. It's a good, dense pellet. This past year was the first time I saw any hint of a crust or 'hockey puck' in the bottom of the pot. Nothing severe but it was different.

I may get a few bags of each just to do my own comparison. Seems like everything I listed other than the Somersets and the Greenways is unknown to the outside world.

P.S. A big thanks to everyone who took the time to reply to the thread.

That's the problem with trying to get opinions on pellets. Most seem to be regionalized and you'll get all sorts of opinions from people with varying degrees of expertise and abilities to rationalize what their stoves are doing. Do what you said and sample some of each that's available. They ALL have very close to the same btu's per pound so look for amount of ash, need for frequent pot cleaning, and feeding problems. Some pellets will be more dense than others so without readjusting anything you will get different pounds/hr feed rate which will make you think one brand burns hotter than another when in reality you are just using more of that bag of pellets with each turn of the auger. Pellet length can also influence feed rates severely. You want them shorter and consistent as possible.
