Likes: ONCE the unit is fired up and burning, all is well. We like it, really!


Dislikes: Smokes out the house every time we light it!


Comments: (installed 10 Dec 07; writting this review 11 Jan 08) I have used fireplaces and wood stoves for nearly 30-years, so someone please tell me is it me or the unit? You see, the unit smokes out the entire house when we light it. The colder the day, the more cold air pushing down the chimney. The cold downdraft pushes smoke out into the house for several minutes before the unit warms up and creates a draft "up." I've done what the user manual says, light it and close the door. But the kindling is smothered and smoke poors from the air control inlets! I try lighting small fires with little paper, with lots of paper, with the door open a notch, partial, and all the way open. We still get smoked out. So we wrote Jotul North America on 30 December 2007 of these events and are waiting for some guidance. That is the reason I am very much middle of the road right now on rating the Jotul C 550. Ask me if I am happy...? Ask me if my wife is happy! (WARNING: this rating is being written with windows and doors wide open and fans on in attempt to clear the smoke! Again, is it me or this symptomatic of all inserts?)
